We Build Contracting was founded in Fredericton, New Brunswick by Derick Weeks, built on a lifelong passion for construction and a deep understanding of what it means to run a business the right way.
What started as a natural transition from entrepreneurship into construction has grown into a trusted contracting company backed by decades of experience, a skilled team of tradespeople, and a solid reputation built project by project.
Derick’s approach has always been simple: take pride in the work, treat people right, and never cut corners. That mindset was shaped early on, from years spent in his father’s woodworking shop to building and leading a successful business in the hospitality industry. Today, that same philosophy drives every project We Build takes on.
We believe great work comes from strong systems, clear communication, and the right people. That’s why we focus not only on craftsmanship, but on creating a process that clients can trust from start to finish.
Today, We Build Contracting serves homeowners and businesses throughout Fredericton and surrounding areas. From full renovations and custom builds to detailed carpentry work, we bring the same level of care, professionalism, and attention to detail to every project.

Hello,
My name is Derick Weeks, owner of We Build Contracting. I was born and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and I’ve been surrounded by entrepreneurship and construction for as long as I can remember.
My parents, Sandra Jamieson and Leonard Weeks, both held MBAs and worked with the Government of New Brunswick in the business development sector. They also owned a woodworking business called The Turning Post in the 1980s, where they specialized in custom staircases, columns, and detailed woodwork. That environment sparked my passion for building, as I spent much of my childhood in the shop. It’s where I first learned to build and became the kid who could make just about anything, from tree forts and structured snow igloos to go-karts and hockey nets made from carpet and 2x4s. That thing was heavy, but rugged.
After high school, I entered the business world through the hospitality industry, becoming General Manager at boom! Nightclub in Fredericton. Over the next eight years, guided by my parents and alongside my partners and mentors Michael Young, Steven DeWitt, Ken Roberts, and Marty Mockler, we built a successful business from the ground up.
That experience taught me invaluable lessons about people, how to listen, how to lead, and how to create an environment where both clients and team members feel valued and supported. It also taught me the importance of systems and standards, building checklists, creating structure, and developing a well-oiled machine that helps teams succeed.
Running an entertainment venue also meant constantly reinventing the space. We were always renovating, working with designers, coordinating trades, and getting hands-on wherever possible. Through that process, I developed a deep understanding of what goes into building and renovating, the importance of skilled tradespeople, and the risks of getting it wrong.
In my late twenties, as I began thinking about building a family, I knew it was time to step away from the late nights and weekend demands. My partners felt the same, and together we made the decision to sell the business.
A few years earlier, I had purchased my first home and renovated it from top to bottom. I also began helping friends and family with their projects using my father’s tools. With a background in building a successful business and a growing passion for construction, paired with just enough experience to be dangerous, I took the leap and fully committed to a new path. That’s how We Build Contracting began.
Today, nearly two decades later, with Red Seal accreditation, ongoing training, and a team of trusted, skilled tradespeople around me, along with hundreds of projects behind us, I’m proud to say we’ve built something meaningful and respectable within the Fredericton community. I’m grateful to the many people who have been part of the journey, and I look forward to adding you to it.
